St. Vincent and the Grenadines has made significant steps towards eliminating Mother to Child transmission of HIV and Syphilis.

This was announced yesterday by Minister of Health, Wellness and the Environment, Hon. Luke Browne, during his address at the opening of the annual meeting of the Pan American Health Organization/ World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) Sub-Regional Managers’ at the National Insurance Services (NIS) Conference Room.

Minister Browne said he recently received a report from the Director of the HIV/AIDS Secretariat indicating that this country has eliminated Mother to Child transmission of HIV and Syphilis, and they are in the process of formally inviting PAHO to validate the record.

That was Hon. Luke Browne Minister of Health, Wellness and the Environment.

As treatment for prevention of mother-to-child-transmission is not 100% effective, elimination of transmission is defined as a reduction of transmission to such a low level that it no longer constitutes a public health problem.
