St. Vincent and the Grenadines joins the rest of the world in celebrating International Women’s Day, today, March 8th, 2016.

The United Nations says International Women’s Day is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.

This year’s theme is “Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step It Up for Gender Equality”.

The idea of this theme is to consider how to accelerate the 2030 Agenda, building momentum for the effective implementation of the new Sustainable Development Goals, especially goal number 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls; and number 4: Ensure inclusive and quality education for all and promote lifelong learning.

To mark this occasion, the Gender Affairs Division hosted a Secondary School Debate this morning at Frenches House in Kingstown.

The topic for the debate was “Should more women be in leadership positions?” and featured participation from students of the Dr. J. P. Eustace Memorial Secondary School, Bishop’s College Kingstown, Intermediate Secondary School and Thomas Saunders Secondary School.
