President Chandrikapersad “Chan” Santokhi says his administration will do everything it can to protect the dam after concerns had been raised that recent economic activities near the Afobaka hydro dam in recent months could affect the integrity of the structure.

“As a government, we will do everything we can to protect our dam for national security,” said Santokhi.

Manager of the Staatsolie Power Company Suriname (SPCS), Eddy Fränkel, said ‘there is a threat of an unmanageable situation in the buffer zone near the main dam”.

The authorities say Staatsolie Maatschappij Suriname NV has formally established a safety zone around the reservoir.

As a result, all economic activities in this zone are prohibited. No permits may be issued for land, concessions and business activities in this area. Permits previously issued within this zone will be revoked. These measures will be established by state decree.
