The government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines has lifted the temporary ban imposed on the import and sale of corned beef originating from Brazil.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Commerce said in a statement dated April 5, 2017, that “A Jamaican technical team visited Brazil last week and inspected facilities which export most of the corned beef imported from Brazil.”

According to the release “the facilities were found to be in compliance with international standards.” Based on these factors a decision has been taken to lift the ban.”

The government had imposed a temporary ban on the importation and sale of all beef and poultry products from Brazil, including corned beef on March 22, 2017, following recent findings that meat producers in Brazil allegedly bribed inspectors to certify meat that was rotten.

The government will continue to monitor the situation.

This decision by the government here to lift the ban on corned beef and other meat products from Brazil comes in wake of a similar decision taken by authorities in Barbados and Jamaica.
