School children here in St. Vincent and the Grenadines are being given an opportunity to show their solidarity with persons in Antigua and Barbuda, Anguilla, the British Virgin Islands (BVI) and St. Martin, after those islands sustained extensive damage from Hurricane Irma.

The Ministry of Education has devised an initiative whereby students of the various schools here will be asked to contribute EC$1.00.

Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves said Minister of Education St. Clair Jimmy Prince spoke about the plan during the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

Speaking on Thursday on WEFM’s Morning Program, Dr. Gonsalves said that a similar activity was carried out several years ago when there was a disaster in Belize.

The Prime Minister said teachers can use this opportunity to educate the students about the relationship St. Vincent and the Grenadines has with those islands in the northern Caribbean that were impacted by Irma, last week.
