Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Ralph Gonsalves has highlighted the fact that while voter registration has increased in every constituency, the number of individuals that went out to the polls on Election Day has actually seen a decrease. Prime Minister Gonsalves discussed possible reasons for the decline in voter turnout while speaking on the Issues at Hand program aired on Sundays on WEFM.

“I think overwhelmingly, those who stayed away, stayed away because they felt that the Government, however correct the strategic line is for the development of the country, did not address sufficiently, for them in an immediate and direct way, their own particular concerns, whatever those concerns may be in material terms.

Material here doesn’t mean getting building materials, which may be one of the things but material terms, covers a wide range of things; they didn’t get a job, they didn’t get something which they think was important to them.” Gonsalves said.

Dr. Gonsalves’ Unity Labour Party (ULP) won nine of the fifteen parliamentary seats in the November 5th General Elections.
