St.Vincent and the Grenadines has just entered a new stage in its national response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Friday a PCR test machine was offloaded from a Regional Security Service aircraft this now allows for in country testing for COVID-19 in SVG.

The PCR test is regarded as the golden standard when it comes to testing for COVID-19. Previously samples would have to be sent off to the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) for PCR testing.

With the country now in possession of its own PCR machine there should be considerably less time between the taking of samples and receiving of results.

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a process that causes a very small well-defined segment of DNA to be amplified, or multiplied many hundreds of thousands of times, so that there is enough of it to be detected and analyzed.

The machine was originally intended to arrive sometime during Mid-April but due to complications with the US customs it had not been able to be received until now.
