During the past three months, the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) has increased its surveillance of the dengue outbreak.

However, a PAHO & World Health Organisation representative to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean said that member countries will have to the fight the mosquito-borne disease while simultaneously battling the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said that from August to October, about US$345 000 was spent in keys areas such as vector control, risk communication, clinical management and lab diagnoses.

“Despite this support, there are still reports of cases on a weekly basis and requests for PAHO’s technical assistance and support. So, our goal at this point is to control the dengue outbreak, reduce the dengue incidents by 50 per cent on a weekly basis and to reduce mortality to zero,” he said.
