South African Olympic and Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius has been released under house arrest nearly one year after he was jailed for killing his girlfriend.

According to The Associated Press a spokesman for South Africa’s correctional services department, said the double-amputee Olympic runner who fatally shot his girlfriend on Valentine’s Day 2013 was put under “correctional supervision” last night.

A parole board at the prison in Pretoria where Pistorius has served nearly a year of his five-year sentence for manslaughter, made the decision for the runner to be put under house arrest.

It came after an initial ruling to release him from prison in August was canceled at the last minute after intervention by the justice minister.
