During a press conference earlier this week the Director of the NIS Stewart Haynes answered several questions the public had concerning the measures being taken during the COVID-19 pandemic. One of the questions answered was what requirements were to be satisfied in order for an individual to benefit from the unemployment funds.

‘You have to be an insured person, meaning registered with the NIS, you have to be under our pensionable age currently it’s 62, you have to have been laid off after March 1st, 2020 as a result of COVID-19, you have to have at least 26 weeks of contribution akin to 6 months of which in the last quarter there are 8 weeks of contribution prior to you being laid off.’

Mr.Haynes also went on to say that those who are self employed will also be covered under this unemployment program.
