The Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment is continuing its thrust towards tackle the burden of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) which is among the leading causes of death and disability in this country.

Today, the Health Ministry in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is holding a one day workshop, entitled “Self care management for persons with chronic diseases”.

In his remarks at the opening of the workshop this morning at the Methodist Church Hall in Kingstown, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Cuthbert Knights said it is very important for persons with chronic diseases to be able to properly manage their health conditions.

Mr. Knights said that at the end of the workshop, it is expected that participants with chronic conditions will be better equipped to utilize the necessary skills that will assist them in managing aspects of their illness in a confident manner.

Meanwhile, Aneke Wilson, PAHO Country Programme Specialist for St. Vincent and the Grenadines said diabetes, hypertension and cancers are among the ten leading causes of morbidity in this country.
