The Ministry of Agriculture in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) joins with the rest of the world today to celebrate World Food Day.

World Food Day is celebrated each year on October 16 and this year’s theme is: “Change the future of migration, invest in food security and rural development.”

Here on the local front, the Ministry of Agriculture is hosting an Agricultural Exhibition as part of World Food Day activities.

It is being held at Heritage Square in Kingstown and features agricultural produce, arts and crafts, along with a cultural package from 2 pm to 4 pm.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Migration is part of the process of development as economies undergo structural transformation and people search for better employment opportunities within and across countries.

The challenge is to address the structural drivers of large movements of people to make migration safe, orderly and regular.

In this way, migration can contribute to economic growth and improve food security and rural livelihoods, thus advancing countries’ progress in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals; hence the selection of this year’s theme.
