Minister of Justice Delroy Chuck earlier this month announced that he would be taking a submission to Cabinet which would outline the reasons the 1898 Obeah Act should be repealed.
The Jamaica Observer Newspaper said in a report, that Minister Chuck’s announcement has since met resistance from church leaders across the island, with several threatening to fight any legislation legalizing obeah.
Some persons told the Jamaica Observer Newspaper, that Obeah is [an] African culture and it should not be illegal, while others say obeah is of the devil a practice that can and will destroy the country.
Obeah is a system of spiritual and healing practices developed among enslaved West Africans in the West Indies.
