Jamaica’s Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller says there must be a non-partisan approach towards the fight against the mosquito-borne Zika virus as she announced that her administration will be spending an additional 200 million Jamaica dollars on the campaign.

In a radio and television broadcast on Tuesday night Prime Minister Simpson Miller said that the recent confirmation of a case in Jamaica “is not a cause for alarm” and that the case involving a four-year-old child, who has since recovered, “must instill greater urgency to do all we can to prevent being bitten by mosquitoes.”

The Prime Minister said she is deeply concerned about this threat to public health, but noted that “Over the past several months, the government has heightened the country’s vector control programme and public information activities”.

She told women that while getting pregnant “is your personal choice” she would hope they would heed the advice of the authorities to delay getting pregnant for the next 6 to 12 months.
