The Jamaica government has ordered the closure of 17 gas stations Island wide after the Bureau of Standards confirmed that contaminated gas was being sold at these stations.

Energy Minister Phillip Paulwell issued the order for the gas stations to be closed at midnight on Tuesday.

Scientists from the Bureau of Standards Jamaica (BSJ) were ordered to serve the closure notices, which if breached, would trigger an immediate shutdown.

According to BSJ Chairman, Professor Winston Davidson, other gas stations may be identified as more test results are to be finalized between today and Thursday.

Last week Paulwell ordered the testing of samples from gas stations across the island following reports from motorists that contaminated fuel purchased had been damaging their vehicles.
