The Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment has launched a Hand Hygiene Campaign in an effort to reduce the growing burden of health care associated infections at medical facilities, particularly the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital.

The campaign was officially launched at a Hand Hygiene Symposium held yesterday evening at the Blue Lagoon Hotel at Ratho Mill.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Luis DeShong said it is indeed a disgrace that some people do not survive the infections which they accidentally catch while being cared for in hospitals, therefore the campaign aims to promote hand hygiene as an important aspect of health care.

Meanwhile, Director of the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) Dr. Carissa Etienne welcomed the launch of the Hand Hygiene Campaign and said it is one of the most effective yet simple and cost effective methods of reducing the transmission of infections.
