Police in Trinidad and Tobago say four people are assisting their investigations into the murders of a police officer and a University of the West Indies (UWI) student who were gunned down in Aranquez, on the outskirts of the capital, early on Monday.

Police have identified the victims as Constable Russell Ramnarine, age 24, and 22-year-old engineering student, Avery Keshwar.

Media reports said that Ramnarine and a colleague were responding to a robbery in the area and were in the company of Keshwar when the alleged suspect was spotted.

The suspect fled and while the officers gave chase, Ramnarine, later returned to the motor vehicle where the student was still seated. Unidentified gunmen then opened fire on the occupants of the vehicle, killing them.

Nearly 400 people have been killed in Trinidad and Tobago so far this year.
