Meteorologists have told residents and tourists in Bermuda to remain vigilant into next week after Tropical Storm Florence strengthened to become the Atlantic season’s third hurricane yesterday.

The Bermuda Weather Service (BWS) said Florence was 1,629 miles east-southeast of Bermuda.

Florence grew into a Category 3 Hurricane this morning. Its peak winds have climbed to 125 miles per hour.

Florence’s intensity is forecast to fluctuate over the next several days, perhaps modestly weakening to a Category 2 storm.

During this time, Florence will continue to meander north-westward, possibly inching dangerously close to Bermuda by the latter half of the weekend.

After that, the storm’s exact track and strength become major wild cards in the face of compounding uncertainties.

Meanwhile, forecasters are also keeping a close watch on a recently formed tropical wave near the Cape (Cabo) Verde Islands which is being given a 70 per cent chance of developing into a tropical cyclone in the next five days.
