A Dominican nurse, Joanna Laurent-Blaize, has been awarded the Caribbean Nurses Organization (CNO) 2024 Honorary Award, at the 33rd Biennial Conference held in Guyana on Friday.

Laurent-Blaize received the award for her dedication, innovation, and unwavering commitment to infection control in Dominica and across the region for the past 26 years.

The nurse played a key role in developing standard operation procedures for isolation units in Dominica during the COVID-19 pandemic.  Her work also extends to the improvement of care having developed intensive care unit bundles which enhanced nursing practices.

For ten years, Nurse Laurent-Blaize served as an Infection Control and Clinical Care Nurse at the Infectious Disease Clinic and has also served alongside PAHO consultants in the review of two IPC Neonatal documents in Uruguay, South America for use in their health institution.

Nurse Laurent-Blaize also served as a resource personnel alongside PAHO consultants where she co-facilitated IPC training in Grenada and conducted IPC assessments that led to UN funding for their Neonatal Unit.  She also participated in Caribbean IPC Workshops as facilitator.

The CNO said Laurent-Blaize has made “exceptional contributions as Dominica’s Infection Control Officer, demonstrating her commitment to advancing infection prevention and control (IPC) practices both locally and regionally.”
