A prominent gynecologist in Trinidad and Tobago yesterday advised women that given the threat of the Zika virus to newborns it was best to postpone getting pregnant and also take precautions to avoid unexpected pregnancies, especially during this Carnival season.

Fyzabad MP and gynecologist, Dr. Lackram Bodoe, former chairman of the South West Regional Health Authority, told the Trinidad Express the Zika virus is a real threat to Trinidad and Tobago due to its proximity to Latin America.

He said “The increased travel into the island due to Carnival would also increase this threat, adding that the World Health Organisation has declared a worldwide public health emergency in recognition of the pandemic potential of this virus and it is just a matter of time before the first case is diagnosed in the country.
