Defending champions Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams raced into the Australian Open second round today as the year’s first Grand Slam was rocked by claims of widespread match-fixing in tennis.

The BBC and BuzzFeed News have obtained secret files that contain evidence of suspected match-fixing in tennis.

Those files indicate that, over the past decade, 16 players who have been ranked in the world’s top 50 have been repeatedly flagged to the Tennis Integrity Unit over suspicions they have thrown matches.

But all of the players, including winners of Grand Slam titles, were allowed to continue competing.

UK Prime Minister David Cameron says he is “deeply concerned” that another sport is facing accusations of corruption and wants allegations of widespread match-fixing in tennis investigated fully by the sport’s governing bodies, his spokesman said today.
