At least 62 people have reportedly died after torrential rain caused flash floods in south-eastern Spain.

The country was severely hit by heavy rain and hailstorms, triggering rapid flooding across multiple regions, resulting in the increasing death toll and severe damages to infrastructure.

Some locations in southern and eastern Spain received up to 12 inches of rain in just a few hours on Tuesday.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez speaking on this morning asked people to remain vigilant and said that his government would use all means necessary to help victims of the floods. He is set to visit Valencia on Thursday.

Rescue efforts are currently under way and the president of the Valencia region, Carlós Mazón, said it was “impossible” to put an exact number on the final death toll at this stage.

The Spanish government has decreed three days of official mourning for victims of the flooding, starting on Thursday.
