The Antigua and Barbuda government yesterday announced that damage to the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Stadium will run to more than $100,000 following the relocation of the Barbudans who had been housed there until recently.
This was disclosed by Sir Rodney Williams, the governor-general, during the Speech from the Throne in parliament.
“The cost of the repairs to the previously occupied spaces at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium is estimated at $179,861,” Sir Rodney revealed.
Some 200 Barbudans were housed at the facility over the nearly four months since Hurricane Irma devastated homes on Barbuda, forcing an evacuation of the island’s more than 1,000 residents.
The Barbudans were relocated to the Nurses’ Hostel almost two weeks ago, but their departure revealed that the sporting facility had been left in an undesirable condition.
According to Conliffe Phillip, stadium manager: “There was major damage done to many of the doors, most of the walls have to be repainted, there are issues with the dividers for the shower stalls and the toilets, so reinforcement will have to be done to those and the vanities of the face basins.”
