In a bid to tackle the scourge of praedial larceny, the Barbados government has submitted a draft law to parliament to impose harsher penalties and sanctions on perpetrators.

Elsworth Reid, permanent secretary at the ministry of agriculture, food, fisheries and water resource management, said that farmers are losing “thousands and thousands of dollars to people who are thieving the results of their hard work and efforts”.

Delivering the feature address on Monday morning at the opening ceremony of the week-long Caribbean Pacific Agri-Food Forum at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, Reid said the Barbados parliament will address the proposed bill “before the end of this year”.

During a town hall meeting earlier this year, praedial larceny was marked as one of the major challenges impacting the growth of the agricultural sector in Barbados, according to a report by Caribbean News Now.
