Police in Grenada have confirmed that an ex-convict, recently released from prison, turned himself into custody on Monday in connection with the stabbing death of an American tourist on Sunday.

Jessica Colker, a 39 year old anesthesiologist from Atlanta, Georgia, who arrived in Grenada on Saturday with her husband, was murdered on a secluded stretch of beach.

Colker was reportedly attacked by a man armed with a cutlass while walking on a beach with her husband, Brian Melito, age 62, who is also a physician. He survived the attack and raised the alarm.

Sylvan McIntyre, Head of the Community Relations Division of the Grenada Police Force said that Dave Benjamin, who was recently released from jail after serving time for rape, walked into the St. David Police Station early Monday morning.

McIntyre said an autopsy is to be done on the body to determine the exact cause of death. The pathology report will also assist the police in determining what charge or charges will be laid.
